The Most Important Things to Remember About Internet Connections When Moving Home
Moving is a big deal, and a little preparation can make all the difference between a seamless transition and a stressful ordeal, especially when it comes to internet.
Careful planning and paying attention to key details can help ensure the internet connection is ready to go.
While some may think moving can be organised in a matter of days – there are certain elements that cannot be rushed.
Plan early
Even the most organised of movers, can get caught out if they don’t allow enough time to organise their internet connection and the last thing anyone wants is to be in their new home without any internet. As strata managers, these helpful tips can assist your residents with managing their internet connectivity throughout the moving process.
“We recommend starting the internet connection process around four weeks prior to the move,” nbn General Manager of Residential Products, Courtney McMahon says.
“Firstly, advise your residents to check their address1 and make sure that their new home can connect to the nbn® network. Then, they should contact their chosen phone and internet provider to arrange for a new service to be connected at the new address, including any necessary equipment installation,” she adds.
“Secondly, if your residents are changing providers, ask them to notify their current provider when they would like to disconnect the service at their current address.”
Lastly, if they’re already connected to the nbn network at their current address, ensure they leave the nbn connection box when they leave – as nbn connection boxes are registered to specific addresses and won’t work at their new place.
Anticipate delays and hiccups
Moving can be unpredictable, and even the best-laid plans can encounter unexpected bumps along the way.
If your residents are moving into a newly built home they have purchased, they will want to check if all electrical elements work during their pre-settlement.
If they’re moving into an existing home, they might arrive to find that the previous owners took the nbn connection box with them.
“This can delay the ability to connect an internet service. This is why leaving the nbn connection box/equipment behind is so important,” McMahon says.
“If they’ve already arranged to connect to the nbn network, and the nbn connection box isn’t there, please advise them to let their phone and internet provider know. They’ll arrange to get one to them as soon as possible.”
If you do come across a resident who has mistakenly brought their nbn connection box with them from their previous address, there is an easy way to remedy this mistake. Anyone who has removed a connection box from a previous address can post it back to nbn free of charge through Australia Post2. This also helps to reduce landfill, as the nbn connection boxes tend to be disposed of once residents realise they won’t work in their new address.
Stay organised and keep track of important details
Keeping on top of the plan is key to a smooth move. Ensuring your residents are across small – but
important – details before the big day is critical, too.
For example, remind your residents if they’re renting their new place, they’ll need the owner’s permission to get nbn equipment installed – only if the property has never had nbn equipment installed, or in some instances, is now eligible for a full fibre upgrade.*
“If nbn equipment has not previously been installed at the property, an nbn technician will be required to attend the home and install cabling to enable the completion of the nbn connection,” McMahon says.
“The provider will organise this appointment for your residents. Remind them someone over 18 will need to be at home to allow the installation to go ahead,” she adds.
“If the home is rented, and nbn equipment has not previously been installed, permission from the owner will need to be sought – which is something that you could facilitate on their behalf.”
As moves happen throughout the year in buildings you manage, make sure to help your residents follow these steps – especially when it comes to getting that all important Wi-Fi connected – for a less stressful experience. To help your residents with moving, nbn has prepared a helpful checklist3.
*Conditions, eligibility criteria and costs will apply – please speak with your preferred provider. Eligibility criteria includes among other things, being designated by nbn as a simple premises and placing an order for an nbn powered plan based on an eligible wholesale speed tier. Additional costs may apply to providers, who may choose to pass this charge onto their customers.
