Sustainability in Strata

In the Summer edition of Inside Strata, Sustainability in Strata was a feature of the SCA’s upcoming Federal Election Priorities, calling on government to work with SCA to invest in attainable energy efficiency and sustainability programs within strata communities. We applaud this approach and see this shared vision as a fundamental component of our partnership with the SCA.

As we approach the SCA National Conference, with the theme of Our Liveable Future and its reference to the United Nations Sustainability Goals, we thought it timely to focus on those areas where there is a genuine opportunity to make an immediate difference in the buildings we manage and live in. From the 11 UN Sustainability Goals we believe those below are achievable for SCA members and their owners.

Goal 6 – Clean Water & Sanitation

Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

Active Utilities, in conjunction with close partners, have developed and released our SPRING treatment system which is currently being used in our broadacre communities to provide better quality water. This system (soon to be available for high rise buildings) allows for the treatment and reuse of water and ability to generate energy from sewerage. Although a smaller part of our business today, we see our solutions across water more broadly than just our Local Water Networks, and will increasingly contribute to better water quality for the communities we service.

Goal 7 – Affordable & Clean Energy

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

Active Utilities has worked with our customers to install solar generation across many of the buildings we manage, with each solution driving significant savings into the site. With other buildings we partner to deliver green energy in from the grid and every customer in one of our Local Energy Networks can elect to make their own contribution through requesting green power for their account.

Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities & Communities

Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable

Through our Local Utility Networks for energy, water and air, together with our other sustainability solutions, we believe wholeheartedly that we are helping to create better communities. And from these better communities, better cities emerge. Our solutions ensure the buildings we work with will stay relevant and sustainable into the future. We are also always pushing ahead with research and development of the latest product or service that will ensure that your building stays ahead of the curve.

Goal 13 – Climate Action

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.

Along with our on-site renewable generation and other green power solutions, we are actively developing Carbon Neutral Certification for Strata businesses and their buildings. We are currently deploying the largest strata residential EV charging solution in Australia and continuing to progress development in waste to energy water treatment and other generation/energy storage solutions.

Goal 15 – Life on land

Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.

This is an easy goal to contribute towards for everyone. Active Utilities has a partnership in place with One Tree Planted (onetreeplanted.org) where they plant trees, the number of which is based on the solution we provide to our customers.

Independent of our Local Energy Networks and through our Energy Procurement solutions, we provide support to our customers on a range of green options through Power Purchase Agreements (PPA’s) enabling the introduction of solar at a reasonable cost.
