‘Strata manager’ now officially recognised by the ABS as an occupation in Australia
Following years of advocacy, SCA Australasia was advised early this year that following successful consultation with the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) the occupation title of ‘strata manager’ would be introduced for the first time under their occupations classifications regime.
The Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA), is now available and the new strata manager classification can be found here.
So what does that mean in practice?
This is a huge win for the strata sector and its ongoing growth and professionalism.
Until this change, strata managers were only classified by the ABS as a sub-set of property and real estate managers, not as a specialist or discreet occupation.
The new classification of ‘strata manager’ is befitting of an industry that has not only grown, but professionalised significantly and carries out a specialised set of roles and responsibilities, with a well-defined and unique skillset.
As an industry, we can point to a specialist profession, with a nationally recognised and defined set of skills, roles and responsibilities, as defined by the ABS, a well-respected federal government body.
The ABS will now be collecting important data about the specific occupation of ‘strata manager’, including how many people work in the field, where they are distributed, what skills they have, what duties they fulfil, among many other data points.
Data like this, held in an official capacity, is incredibly important when it comes to moments like needing to make a case for skilled migration status, expanding vocational education training, and funding and advocating for change as an industry to government, among many other potential positives.
This data will also aid our industry benchmark data prepared for our Strata Insights series of publications, and complement the research work done into the strata landscape by research institutions, federal, state and territory governments, and private organisations on specific topics.
