SCA (NZ) Roundtables and Activities

With New Zealand experiencing unprecedented population growth and urbanisation, SCA (NZ) has recognised the urgent need to address outdated regulatory frameworks that hinder efficient development of the built environment. Given that the rate of defective buildings in New Zealand is one of the highest in the OECD, timely and proactive advocacy is critical in shaping the future of the country’s built environment.

The organisation aims to foster a robust regulatory environment that promotes safety and sustainability while accommodating an anticipated surge in strata living. Recent industry roundtables have provided invaluable platforms for SCA (NZ) and the wider industry to discuss pressing issues related to New Zealand’s building reform needs.

Earlier this year, SCA (NZ) hosted a landmark roundtable focused on comprehensive building reform. Participants, including industry experts, property developers, and strata managers, engaged in rigorous discussions about the challenges facing the building sector. Key issues raised during the roundtable included long-term maintenance plans, owner education on building quality and maintenance, the current regulatory framework, qualifications for practitioners, and much more.

Another, more recent roundtable was held with the executives of both SCA (NZ) and the Body Corporate Chairs’ Group NZ (BCCG NZ). This roundtable addressed recent government proposals regarding remote building inspections, and the removal of minimum size requirements for apartments. While intended to streamline processes and enhance efficiency, these proposals raised significant concerns regarding quality and liveability for both groups.

These discussions align with the vision of a thriving strata sector expected to grow significantly in the coming years. As urban spaces evolve, strata living presents a viable solution to housing challenges, offering community-oriented environments that meet diverse needs. However, for this growth to be sustainable, advocacy must focus on comprehensive reforms that prioritise safety, quality, and community well-being.

Looking ahead, SCA (NZ) is committed to continued engagement with government officials and industry stakeholders to ensure that the voices of strata communities are heard. The organisation will strive to influence policy that facilitates growth while maintaining the integrity and liveability of urban spaces. As changes unfold, the commitment remains to champion a future where quality strata living is accessible to all New Zealanders.
