Gold Coast based body corporate solicitor James Nickless has been appointed as the new President of Strata Community Association (Qld).

He leads a 1,000-strong membership and represents an estimated 1.2million Queenslanders who own or live in units, apartments, townhouses and other strata titled property, with a total insured value of $120billion in Queensland.

Elected to the Board in 2016, James has served as SCA (Qld) Vice-President for the last two years and supported the Legislation and Policy Committee of SCA (Qld) since 2013. James has a strong vision for SCA (Qld) in 2020, building on a few years of strong advocacy work.

He says, “I hope to build upon our already strong reputation for advocacy and drive the legislative changes which we have been calling for. I also hope to achieve greater engagement and collaboration from the entire property sector, of which strata makes up a significant and important part.

“SCA (Qld) is now starting to see the benefit of all the years of hard work and tireless dedication that has been put in by all of the volunteers on SCA (Qld) boards and committees over the past 35 years.

“We now have a strong voice in the media and with Government that has influence, based upon the combined depth of expertise of all our members who regularly share their knowledge and experience on issues that matter in strata.”

A specialist in body corporate and strata law, James is steadfast in his commitment to improving strata living in the state of Queensland, which is home to 50,000 community title schemes, comprising more than half a million lots.

On being elected to the SCA (Qld) Board twice already, he says, “I’m honoured to be elected to the Board and to be working alongside colleagues who I deeply respect and who are leaders in their own right within the strata industry.

“What I value most about accepting a Board position is the genuine cooperation of a diverse group of people from various sectors of the strata industry with a single focus of making the strata industry better for all stakeholders.”

James is a certified SCA A100 trainer and regularly presents seminars on various aspects of strata law and professional development to clients, industry groups and universities, including Queensland University of Technology and Bond University.
