Why the HFC upgrade matters
These upgrades are part of our commitment to continually improve Australia’s digital infrastructure and will help better support an increasing demand for data, now and into the future.
By replacing parts of the network with next-generation technologies and providing additional network capacity, we expect customers to be able to enjoy a more reliable nbn experience.
The upgrade: what to expect
To minimise disruptions, nbn has carefully planned the upgrade schedule with two types of upgrade windows: a 5-day window and a 10-day window. Residents will be informed about the length of the upgrade window, with timely updates about the scheduled works and any potential service interruptions.
Upgrade work is typically carried out on weekdays between 7am and 7pm. Night works (from 7pm until 7am) and weekend works are expected to be rare, and nbn services are only expected to be interrupted during the designated upgrade window.
Throughout the upgrade period, nbn approved technicians will be available on site to answer questions and provide assistance. Once the upgrade works are complete, your residents can expect to start experiencing the benefits almost immediately.
How Strata Managers can help
Strata Managers play a crucial role as the communication bridge between nbn and residents. Here are two ways you can help ensure the upgrades run smoothly:
- Coordinate building access: Work with residents and building management to make sure technicians can access the required building areas to efficiently perform upgrades, helping to minimise disruptions and keep the process running smoothly.
- Communicate impacts to nbn service: Residents relying on an nbn connection may experience brief interruptions during the upgrade window. By informing residents early, residents have more opportunities to make alternative arrangements/backup connection to help mitigate any brief service interruptions.
Once the HFC network upgrades are complete, residents in your communities can contact their preferred internet provider to explore their speed tier options and discuss how they can best take advantage of the upgraded HFC network.
Make the most of the upgraded network
To help residents in your buildings make the most of their nbn connection, it’s important that they also check that their internet equipment is setup properly.
Here are three quick tips to share with residents to help them get the most out of their nbn connection:
- Age of Wi-Fi router: If a Wi-Fi router is more than five years old, residents may want to consider their internet setup and whether it’s still suitable for their needs.
- Location of their Wi-Fi router: To improve the Wi-Fi signal coverage in homes, residents should position the Wi-Fi router in an open, uncluttered area and as close as possible to where they use the internet the most.
- Distance: If residents live in a larger or multi-storey home, they may want to consider whether a mesh network is suitable for their needs and help strengthen their Wi-Fi signal as they move around in the home.
