ACT Election

As the ACT General Election approaches, SCA (ACT) has intensified its advocacy efforts to ensure the voices of strata managers, owners, and residents are heard, and that key issues facing the strata sector are front and centre in policy discussions.

The ACT features a unique strata landscape, characterised by a high concentration of apartment buildings. With the territory poised for significant population growth, there is strong potential for further strata development and expansion. Consequently, this election presents a pivotal opportunity to advocate for policy reforms that will better support the strata sector and ensure its long-term sustainability.

Over the past several months, SCA has engaged extensively with government representatives to communicate the pressing needs of the strata sector. Our election platform focuses on two key issues:

Issue 1 – Strata Commissioner’s Office: SCA (ACT) is seeking a commitment of $3 million over the next four years from the incoming government to establish a new Strata Commissioner’s Office and appoint a Strata Commissioner. This office would serve as a central authority for strata community oversight, regulation, and dispute resolution, providing essential support and resources for strata owners, residents, managers, and service providers.

Issue 2 – Strata Legislation Working Group: SCA (ACT) advocates for the continuation of the successful collaborative legislative working group that has delivered new legislation addressing the evolving needs of the strata industry during this term of government. These reforms should enhance transparency, fairness, and sustainability within the sector.

A key highlight of SCA’s advocacy was a recent collaborative election event held in partnership with the Owners Corporation Network (OCN). This event brought together over 200 political candidates, key industry leaders, and strata stakeholders to discuss the future of the strata sector in the ACT.

SCA’s ongoing dialogue has ensured that the concerns of strata managers, owners, and residents are well understood by political leaders ahead of the election. SCA’s efforts to engage political leaders has been particularly fruitful, with several parties expressing strong support and commitment to our election priorities, should they be elected.

As the election draws nearer, SCA remains focused on transforming the commitments that have been secured into tangible outcomes. SCA’s advocacy has laid a strong foundation, and the organisation is eager to collaborate with the incoming government to implement the necessary reforms that will strengthen the strata sector.
