NT Election
The recent Northern Territory election provided a crucial opportunity for SCA (SA/NT) to advocate for the strata sector and push for policy reforms to shape the future of multi-unit developments in the region.
The strata industry in the Northern Territory has received relatively little attention from the government in recent years, with a slow reaction to the evolving needs of stakeholders. This has led to a lack of policy development and conflicting, inadequate pieces of governing legislation.
During this time, the Northern Territory has also seen significant growth in multi-unit developments, particularly in its capital, Darwin, as more people turn to apartment living due to its affordability and lifestyle benefits. In response to this rapid growth, SCA’s pre-election advocacy focused on the need for robust legislative frameworks and support for strata managers, owners, and residents.
SCA worked closely with industry stakeholders to ensure the strata sector’s key issues were brought to the forefront of policy discussions. Through a series of roundtable meetings, SCA collaborated with strata managers, property experts, and legal professionals to develop comprehensive issues papers that outlined the most pressing challenges facing the strata industry.
These issues papers became the foundation of SCA’s advocacy efforts, highlighting concerns such as outdated strata legislation, insurance affordability, and the need for building reform. By engaging with a diverse range of stakeholders, SCA ensured that the issues papers reflected broad industry perspectives, providing a comprehensive view of the improvements needed to support sustainable growth in strata communities.
Armed with these well-researched documents, SCA undertook targeted advocacy with government
representatives. Key political figures and candidates across all major parties were engaged, with the issues papers presented to advocate for legislative reforms that would benefit both the strata industry and the broader NT community.
Through advocacy, SCA secured commitments to reviewing existing legislation and exploring pathways to better protect strata owners and residents. This response reinforced the importance of ongoing advocacy for wholesale strata reforms.
With the election behind us and a new Country Liberal Party ministry in place, SCA remains focused on ensuring the progress made continues, and that the work undertaken translates into meaningful action. Committed to working with the new government, SCA is eager to push reforms that will strengthen the strata sector and future-proof it to meet the needs of NT’s growing population.
